Each year Scottsdale Community College (SCC) publishes its Vortex Magazine, a compilation of student art, creative non-fiction, short stories and poetry. Each student’s work is submitted anonymously, later entered into judging process. Some of the submissions are selected into the magazine.
In 2011, I submitted a short story I crafted, about how a family grapples with an unexpected tragedy during the midst of what should have been a positive, momentous time in their lives. “Emotional Baggage” was placed as an honorable mention, and I felt rewarded that my passion for creative writing was recognized alongside many of my talented peers. Featured in the photo (from left) are Professor Sandra Desjardins, Vortex coordinator, Dr. Daniel Corr, SCC vice president of academic and student affairs, me, and Professor Robert Mugford, Vortex judge. Here is my Vortex 2011 Short Story (albeit my name was not originally featured due to the anonymous process).
